Innovative Food Brand Photos

Nord Tempeh Case Study

How do you photograph a food product that has never existed before? That was the starting point of this food photography and food styling project for Nord Tempeh—an innovative, fermented, gut-friendly food made from peas.

Tempeh is traditionally a high-protein, fibre-rich Indonesian food made from soybeans. Creating a pea-based tempeh was something entirely new, especially in the Estonian market. From a visual perspective, this meant building a strong and recognisable look for both food packaging photography and recipe imagery from scratch.

From concept to camera: visual strategy matters

Successful food photography for packaging, websites, and marketing materials always starts long before the camera comes out. Projects like this rely on close collaboration, clear communication, and shared expectations between the brand, designers, and photographers.

The preparation phase included:

  • Getting to know the product and its unique qualities

  • Defining visual goals for the brand

  • Creating a clear mood and colour palette

  • Aligning food styling and photography with brand design

This groundwork ensures that the final images don’t just look beautiful—but also sell the product and strengthen brand recognition.

Collaboration with design studio

This project was led by design studio Unt/Tammik, whose clear brief and mood board provided a strong foundation for the visual direction. The materials outlined how the photography needed to support the overall brand identity, packaging design, and graphic language.

This kind of collaboration is essential in commercial food photography, especially when images are used across multiple platforms:

  • product packaging

  • websites and e-commerce

  • social media

  • press and marketing materials

Food styling and recipe development for brand storytelling

The recipe concepts were developed and prepared by Jürgen Lip, focusing on dishes that highlight the versatility and appeal of the product. Thoughtful food styling played a key role in making the product approachable and appetising—especially important for introducing a new food category to consumers.

Photography and food styling were carried out by Katrin Press, with a focus on creating images that work seamlessly with the brand’s graphic design while remaining flexible for different marketing uses.

The result: a cohesive food brand visual identity

The final images show how food photography, food styling, and brand design come together to create a cohesive visual identity. Nord Tempeh has since begun to “live its own life” as a brand, with photography and graphic design supporting each other across packaging and digital media.

This case study is a great example of how professional food photography for innovative food businesses can:

  • clarify a new product’s positioning

  • build trust with consumers

  • support sales through packaging and online channels

We thank everyone involved for the inspiring collaboration—and wish you good appetite!
